After September 9th 2014 there was mass speculation on how much the Apple Watch would actually cost, all we knew was “Starting at $349″, and that was obviously going to be the 38mm Sport Model.  Estimates for the others were all over the place, John Gruber’s initial controversial estimates had the Stainless Steel model at $999. That estimate fell to $749 two days before the event, and $649 the night before. Here’s why John didn’t think it would go to $549 which was the actual starting price:

“$200 is not enough of a difference to establish Apple Watch Sport and Apple Watch as separate collections.”

I always thought  justifications like that were quite strange, because it sounded like “Apple will make the watch expensive on purpose so it’s luxury”. The reality is that Apple will price something at which … Read More
